Jack's Story:

On January 4, 2016 Adam and Janie Whitaker’s son Jack was born. Jack is the sweetest, smartest little guy and is looking forward to becoming a big brother this fall. Throughout Jack’s two short years he had fought many colds, viruses, ear infections, bumps and bruises, staying strong with a smile on his face through it all.

Jack’s family physician ordered bloodwork in March which came back abnormal, causing a referral to a hematologist. Before that appointment, however, Jack contracted a virus which ended in a trip to the emergency room. The blood tests in the emergency room caused concern that Jack may have a blood tumor or leukemia, which have thankfully been ruled out.

Jack was transferred to Cleveland Clinic for further testing. Through Janie's motherly
intuition and unrelenting persistence, she kept asking the question about his largerthan-normal belly. Finally, an ultrasound was performed. The results revealed a mass in his abdomen. The mass has been identified as a cancerous neuroblastoma. After much research, Adam and Janie made the decision to transfer Jack to Cincinnati Children’s
Hospital where he received four rounds of chemo over the course of 12 weeks.

A recent MRI showed that the neuroblastoma is responding to treatment, however, his
doctors recommended another four rounds of chemo in hopes that the tumor continues to shrink to make surgery safer and more successful. The Whitakers have moved home
to Clyde from the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati. They now travel to Toledo once a week for Jack’s infusions and Cincinnati every 3 weeks for chemo.
