The Beeler Open is a day honoring Walter Ross Beeler. ~

In November of 1943 Beeler applied for Aviation Cadets and that same December he reported to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was tail gunner in WWII and was apart of 8 missions. During his 8th mission is when his incredible story unfolds.

On May 5th 1945, Beeler was on a B29 Super Fortress and apart of a crew on a mission to bomb a target in Japan. There were engine problems with the plane and they crashed at take off into shark infested waters. Only 4 of the 11 crew members survived. Beeler did some desk work as a clerk until he was discharged on January 9th 1946.

Beeler Day is a day to celebrate being a live – celebrated for the first time in 1946 - the tradition continues…
